• A stay supports a component and braces it against engine vibration, so offer it up and get the fasteners started before anything in the joint is finally tightened
• Leave all the fasteners finger tight, then tighten them in the order the manual gives, so the stay is not used to drag a misaligned component into position
• If the stay will not line up without strain, find out why rather than pulling it up on the bolts — a stay under tension feeds that load straight into the bracket, casting or pipe it is meant to support
• Renew a stay that is cracked, bent or has elongated fixing holes instead of straightening it; its whole function is stiffness, and a distorted or loosely held stay transmits vibration rather than resisting it
• Use the specified fasteners with their washers, tightened to the figures in the workshop manual for your engine, and recheck them whenever the component the stay supports is disturbed
