• Find out why the fuse blew before fitting another; a fuse that goes again immediately is reporting a short or an overloaded circuit, not a faulty fuse
• Isolate the battery before working in a fuse box, and pull fuses with the correct puller rather than pliers
• Check the holder as well as the fuse — a corroded or slack holder overheats, discolours the fuse body and causes intermittent faults
• Keep the fuse box lid and its seals in place so the box stays dry, and carry spares of the ratings your engine uses
