🔌 Function

The cable provides the low-resistance return path required by the starter, alternator, control system and other electrical loads.

  • Slow cranking
  • Unstable charging voltage
  • Hot ground cable or terminals
  • Corrosion at the lugs
  • Excessive voltage drop between engine and battery negative

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Clean the lug and mounting-point surfaces of corrosion before connecting, since corrosion at the lugs is what produces the voltage drop and unstable charging noted in the failure signs.
  • Tighten the terminal connections securely at both ends rather than snugging them, as a hot ground cable indicates a poor connection.
