• Establish what the valve seals against, then drain and depressurise that system before removing it so nothing is lost or spilled into the bilge
• Clean the threads and the sealing face in the housing, fit a new sealing washer or O-ring where one is used, and seal a tapered thread with the product the manual specifies
• Tighten to the figure in the manual while holding the body so the outlet finishes pointing where it needs to for draining, and take particular care in an alloy or plastic housing
• Work the valve fully open and fully shut by hand to check it moves freely and seats, and refit any cap, plug or drain hose the original carried
• Make sure the valve is fully closed and capped before refilling, then run the system and check it for weeps — a drain left cracked open is an easy way to lose coolant or oil at sea
