• Drain the relevant side of the system before slackening the cover, and expect seawater still in the space even with the seacock shut
• Clean the sealing faces carefully without scoring them, and always fit new gaskets and O-rings — this joint is what keeps seawater out of the freshwater side
• Inspect what the cover was hiding while it is off: tube ends, debris, scale, and any sacrificial anode in that space
• Refit the cover square and pull the fasteners down evenly and progressively to the manual figures, and never rely on sealant to make up for a distorted or corroded cover
• Refill, vent and check for external leaks and for any sign of one side of the system finding its way into the other
