A toothed sensor wheel used by the engine-speed sensor to determine crankshaft or engine rotational speed in Volvo Penta D3 electronic engine-control systems.

🔌 Function
The wheel passes its teeth through the speed sensor's magnetic field, generating the signal used by the engine-control system to calculate engine speed and position.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- No engine-speed signal
- Crank-no-start condition
- Intermittent shutdown
- Damaged or missing teeth
- Excessive runout
- Incorrect sensor air gap
🛠️ Service Notes
- Renew the chain, sprockets and tensioning or guiding parts together where the workshop manual for your engine treats them as a set; a worn sprocket will quickly wear a new chain, and the reverse is equally true
- Inspect the teeth for hooked, pointed or unevenly worn profiles, and the bore, keyway and locating features for wear, before deciding to reuse anything
- Clean the shaft, keyway and mating faces and make sure the sprocket seats fully home and runs true, with no burr holding it off
- Set the timing using the marks on the components and the procedure in the manual for your engine, then turn the engine over by hand and check the marks again
- Tighten the retaining fastener to the figure in the manual and fit whatever locking washer, plate or tab it specifies
