🔌 Function
Monitors alternator output and battery-system voltage and adjusts rotor field current to hold charging voltage within the specified range.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Low or high charging voltage
- Battery warning lamp remaining on
- Batteries repeatedly undercharging or boiling
- Intermittent charging as the alternator warms
- Unstable voltage causing lamps or electronics to fluctuate
🛠️ Service Notes
- Isolate the batteries before disconnecting anything in the charging circuit, and take care not to short the output terminal against structure
- Before condemning a regulator, clean and check the battery terminals, main earth or return connections and the sensing wiring — poor connections and corroded earths cause most of the charging complaints blamed on regulators
- Check the battery itself is serviceable and the drive belt is in good condition and tensioned by the method given for your engine; a slipping belt looks exactly like a charging fault
- Mount the regulator so its mounting face is clean and it sits flat with the airflow it was designed for — these units rely on getting rid of their own heat
- After fitting, measure the charging voltage with a meter across the battery with the engine running and compare it against the figures in the workshop manual for your engine, rather than judging by a panel lamp
