• Fill only with the diesel exhaust fluid specified for the engine, from clean sealed containers — never water, never diesel, never anything else; contaminated fluid damages the exhaust aftertreatment system and will set faults
• Keep everything that touches the fluid clean and made of DEF-compatible material: urea solution attacks copper, brass, zinc and unprotected steel, and dirt carried in at filling is the usual cause of blocked lines and pump trouble
• Do not fill the tank right to the brim — the fluid expands if it freezes and the system needs that space
• Rinse spills and white crystallised deposits away with clean water rather than scraping them off sealing faces, and renew the tank seals, cap and any filter or screen the workshop manual for your engine lists when the tank is opened
• Refit the level and temperature sensing and the heating connections exactly as they came off, then check for leaks and for stored fault codes after refilling and running
