🔌 Function

The elbow combines exhaust gas with cooling-water discharge and routes the mixture safely into the IPS exhaust system.

• Soot or seawater leakage around the joint
• Internal corrosion or perforation
• Exhaust noise or fumes in the engine compartment
• Cooling-water restriction
• Cracked casting or damaged sealing flange

🛠️ Service Notes

• Renew the gaskets and seals at both joint faces and clean the faces back to bare metal; an exhaust joint will not seal on old gasket remains
• Look through the elbow before fitting and clear any carbon or scale, and where the elbow carries cooling water check its water passages for salt build-up and internal corrosion
• Check the flange faces for flatness and cracking, and check the studs and nuts — heat-cycled exhaust fasteners are often stretched or wasted and are best renewed
• Tighten evenly and progressively across the flange to the figure given in the workshop manual for your engine, then re-check once the engine has been hot and cooled again
• Where the elbow meets exhaust hose, use sound hose and the specified clamping arrangement, and keep the run rising and falling as designed so water cannot track back to the engine
