• Wire the pump on its own protected circuit with cable sized for the length of the run, and make every connection above the level bilge water can reach, using proper waterproof joints rather than tape
• Test the pump and its float or sensing switch by filling the bilge and watching it lift, run and cut out, and repeat the test at the start of each season
• Treat it as a nuisance-water pump rather than damage control — keep the strainer clear and the bilge dry enough that a new leak would be obvious
