• Renew mounts as a set rather than singly, so the engine sits on rubber of matched condition and stiffness
• Take the load off the mounts with proper support before undoing anything, and keep the engine level as it is lowered onto the new ones so each foot lands flat with no gap under it
• Let the engine stand on the new mounts so the rubber can settle before setting the final alignment; aligning straight away gives a reading that changes as soon as the elastomer compresses
• Set the shaft or coupling alignment to the method and limits in the workshop manual for your engine, and check the mounts share the load rather than one being wound down hard to make the figures
• Recheck the alignment and the mount locknuts after the first period of running, and keep oil, fuel and coolant off the rubber — contamination softens and swells it
