⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Squealing or belt slip
- Cracking, glazing or frayed edges
- Loss of charging, pumping or cooling function
- Repeated belt derailment
- Dust accumulation from pulley misalignment
🛠️ Service Notes
- Release the tensioner or adjuster and roll the belt on by hand; never lever a belt over a pulley flange, which cuts the cords and cracks the belt
- Check the belt is seated fully in every groove and that the pulleys line up before turning the engine over
- Inspect the pulleys, idlers and tensioner whenever a belt is changed — a worn or wobbling pulley will destroy a new belt quickly
- Tension it by the method and to the figure given in the workshop manual for your engine, then run up and recheck, as belts settle after the first period of running
- Keep oil, fuel and coolant off the belt, and carry a spare of the correct type aboard
