🔌 Function

• The upper gear is part of a shimmed, matched assembly — record and keep the original shims as you strip it, and set gear backlash and bearing preload or rolling torque to the procedure and figures in the workshop manual for your drive
• Fit gears as a set; running a new pinion against an old, worn gear leads quickly to noise and a second failure
• Fit new seals, O-rings and lock rings whenever the housing is opened, and wash the housing out thoroughly so no metal from the old failure is left in it
• Inspect the driveshaft splines, universal joints and bearing carriers while you have the access, and read the drive oil you drained — water or metal in it tells you what actually failed
• Refill with the specified drive oil to the correct level, pressure- or vacuum-test the housing where the manual calls for it, and check for noise and for water in the oil after the first run
