• Inspect the shoulder and the bore or bush it locates in for wear, scoring and ovality; a worn shoulder lets the part it positions move
• Make sure the shoulder bottoms properly in its bore or against its face, and check that the part it locates still sits or moves as intended
• Tighten to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine — the clamp is taken on the shoulder, so extra torque only stretches or shears the screw
• Renew any locking washer, tab or nut that came with it, and use thread lock or sealant only where the manual calls for it
