- Engine space noticeably hotter than before
- Shield found cracked at its fixing holes or bowed against the manifold

- Fit all standoffs and fixings so the shield stands clear of the manifold; touching metal conducts the heat it is meant to block
- Inspect the wiring and hoses the shield covers while it is off
