🔌 Function

Forms the elastic seal at one joint inside the IPS drive, taking up the clearance between two machined surfaces so drive oil or hydraulic fluid stays in and sea water stays out. It is squeezed into its groove on assembly, and the squeeze is what makes the joint tight, so the ring has to be the right section for its position.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Oil or hydraulic fluid weeping from the drive joint, showing as a wet run or a stain once the boat is lifted
• Drive oil grey, milky or over its normal level, which points to water getting past a seal
• Oil level falling between services with no obvious external leak
• On strip-down the ring is found flattened, hardened or split, or has taken a permanent set in its groove
• Nicks or a spiral twist in the ring from an earlier fit that was made without lubrication

🛠️ Service Notes

• Renew the ring whenever the joint is opened rather than refitting the old one - it has already taken the shape of that groove
• Check parts list for your engine for the drive's own serial number before ordering, as the drive uses several rings of similar appearance in different positions
• Wet the ring with clean oil and lead it over threads and sharp edges rather than stretching it on dry
