🔌 Function

A formed upper-engine cover that encloses the rocker gear and contains lubricating oil while supporting the specified ventilation and sealing arrangement.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Oil leakage around the cover perimeter
  • Cracks or distortion around fasteners
  • Crankcase-vapour leakage
  • Contact with rocker components
  • Repeated gasket failure from a warped sealing face

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Fit a new gasket or seal whenever the cover comes off, and clean both faces down to clean, dry material without scoring them — use a plastic scraper on aluminium and on moulded covers, never an abrasive disc
  • Check the cover itself for distortion and for cracks around the bolt holes, and renew the sealing rings, grommets or spacers that sit under the bolts along with it
  • Draw the bolts down evenly from the centre outwards to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine; over-tightening distorts the cover and crushes the gasket, which is the usual reason a freshly gasketed cover still leaks
  • Make sure the breather, oil filler and any sensor or fitting carried in the cover are clear and correctly sealed before it goes back on
  • Degrease the area after fitting so that at the next check a genuine leak can be told from residual oil
