🔌 Function
Takes the oil mist out of the crankcase gases and drains it back to the sump, so the gases can be vented without carrying oil with them.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Oil misting or dripping from the breather outlet
- Oil pushed past seals or the dipstick lifting, as crankcase pressure rises
- Oil consumption up, with oily deposits found in the inlet pipework
- Separator element found clogged, or its drain blocked with sludge, on strip-down
🛠️ Service Notes
- Check the drain line back to the sump is clear before condemning the separator - a blocked drain floods a good separator and gives the same symptoms
- Renew the separator's seals and gasket when it is refitted
