- Hissing or blowing from the joint area under load
- Soot tracking or oily deposits at a clamp or flange
- Charge pressure down and exhaust temperature up, with the engine feeling flat
- Cracks at a weld or a distorted sealing face found on removal

- Renew the clamps and sealing rings with the pipe and tighten evenly so the joint pulls up square
- Check the supporting brackets and any rubber sleeve in the run, since a slack support is what cracks these pipes
