🔌 Function
Measures the oil level in the sump. Its blade length and the minimum and maximum marks are calibrated to one specific sump and guide-tube combination, so the reading is only true in the installation it was made for.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Level reading that will not agree with the quantity actually drained and refilled
- Dipstick loose in its tube, or its seal or grommet perished so oil mist escapes
- Blade bent, or the marks worn or corroded to the point of being unreadable
- Handle cracked or the blade parted from it, leaving the blade in the tube

- Serial-controlled: this dipstick is listed from serial number 186897 onwards, and a dipstick from the wrong build will read a level that is not there
- Check the guide tube is fully seated and undamaged before blaming the dipstick for an inconsistent reading
