🔌 Function
Forms the flexible joint between two rigid sections of the inlet or exhaust run, sealing the joint while absorbing thermal growth and the relative movement of the two ends.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Hissing or blowing from the joint, loudest under load
- Sleeve gone hard and glazed, or swollen and soft where oil has soaked it
- Splits or circumferential cracks, often starting on the inside of the bend
- Charge pressure lower than expected, with the engine flat and exhaust temperature up
🛠️ Service Notes
- Renew both clamps with the sleeve and pull them up evenly so the joint is square, since a cocked sleeve fails quickly
- Check the supporting brackets in the run: a sleeve that has been taking the pipe's weight will tear again
