• Fit a spacer of the same thickness and type as the one removed — a spacer sets a clearance or an alignment, so substituting one is a change of setting, not a like-for-like repair
• Clean and inspect both faces for burrs, ridges, fretting and distortion, and dress off high spots so the plate seats fully over its whole face
• Keep the original stacking order and orientation where more than one plate or shim is fitted, and note which way round the plate came off
• Renew the gaskets, seals or sealant either side if the joint uses them, and tighten the fasteners evenly to the figures in the workshop manual for your engine
• Where the manual gives a clearance, endfloat or preload to be checked after assembly, measure it rather than assuming the plate has restored it
