🔌 Function
Sits on top of the valve spring and holds it in compression, transferring the spring's load into the valve stem through the pair of split keepers locked into its taper.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Sharp tap or clatter from one valve
- Sudden loss of compression on a cylinder if a cap has released
- Taper bore found worn, bell-mouthed or fretted on strip-down
- Witness marks or hammering on the top face
- Keepers found loose or displaced in the taper
🛠️ Service Notes
- Renew the keepers 21874013 whenever a cap is replaced - the two wear as a pair and reused keepers are the usual reason a new cap releases
- Check the valve stem groove for damage before reassembly
