🔌 Function

Carries oil draining out of the turbocharger bearing housing back down to the sump, letting it fall away freely so the bearing housing does not fill and force oil past its seals.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Blue smoke from the exhaust, especially on start-up and over-run
• Oil in the exhaust elbow or in the charge-air pipework
• Oil weeping or dripping from the turbocharger's lower connection
• Hose found hardened, coked internally or restricted on strip-down
• Cracked or perished where the hose runs close to hot metal

🛠️ Service Notes

• Check the return path is clear before condemning a smoking turbocharger - a restricted return makes a healthy turbo leak oil at both ends
• Keep the run falling with no kink or trap; an oil return that has to climb will back up into the bearing housing
• Renew the sealing hardware at each end rather than reusing it
