• Clean the shaft, keyway and mating faces and make sure the sprocket seats fully home and runs true, with no burr holding it off
• Set the timing using the marks on the components and the procedure in the manual for your engine, then turn the engine over by hand and check the marks again
• Tighten the retaining fastener to the figure in the manual and fit whatever locking washer, plate or tab it specifies
