🔌 Function
Transfers crankshaft power to the engine accessories while maintaining grip and alignment across the pulley system.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Cracking, glazing or rib separation
- Squeal or slip under load
- Frayed edges from misalignment
- Loss of charging or cooling performance
- Belt stretch beyond tensioner travel
🛠️ Service Notes
- Release the tensioner or adjuster and roll the belt on by hand; never lever a belt over a pulley flange, which cuts the cords and cracks the belt
- Check the belt is seated fully in every groove and that the pulleys line up before turning the engine over
- Inspect the pulleys, idlers and tensioner whenever a belt is changed — a worn or wobbling pulley will destroy a new belt quickly
- Tension it by the method and to the figure given in the workshop manual for your engine, then run up and recheck, as belts settle after the first period of running
- Keep oil, fuel and coolant off the belt, and carry a spare of the correct type aboard
