• Check the adapter is threaded fully home before the first blow; a partly engaged thread strips or bends under shock loading and can leave the adapter stuck in the component.
• Pull square and in line with the component's axis — a slide hammer works by axial shock, and it is the straight pull that saves the housing where levering would damage it.
• Keep the shaft clean and lightly oiled so the weight runs freely; a shaft that has picked up grit or corrosion robs the blow of its force and wears the stops.
