🔌 Function

Separates free water and traps dirt before fuel reaches the high-pressure pump and injectors.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Water warning or water visible in drained fuel
  • Hard starting from restriction or air entry
  • Fuel leakage at the seal or drain
  • Premature injector wear from contaminated fuel

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Work clean — cap or cover open connections and keep dirt out of the housing, because contamination introduced at a filter change goes straight to the injection equipment
  • Where the design allows it, fill the new filter with clean fuel before fitting, and smear the sealing ring with clean fuel rather than grease
  • Renew every seal supplied with the filter and tighten to the marking on the filter or the figure in the workshop manual for your engine; over-tightening distorts the seal and causes leaks
  • Prime and bleed the system by the procedure for your engine before cranking, then run up and check the sealing faces for weeps
  • Drain and inspect any water trap at the same time and note what comes out — water or dark sludge means the tank and pre-filter need attention too
