• Check the panel cut-out and refit the seal or boot so the button is sealed against spray from the front — water entry from the front is what kills panel switches
• Make up clean, tight, protected terminal connections and support the wiring behind the panel so it is not hanging on the button's terminals
• Check the button gives a positive action and returns before you fit it, and confirm the circuit makes and breaks correctly once wired
• Where a button has been playing up, check its connections and the circuit it feeds as well; corrosion behind the panel is a more common cause than a worn button
