Magnetic drain/inspection plug used in Volvo Penta sterndrive lower gear housings. Its magnet collects ferrous wear debris and provides an important inspection point during gear-oil service.

🔌 Function

Closes the gear-oil drain passage and captures magnetic wear particles for condition inspection.

🛠️ Service Notes

• Clean the magnet completely at every oil change and read what comes off it — a light grey paste is normal wear, while flakes, chips or bright slivers mean something is breaking up and want investigating before the unit is run on
• Renew the sealing washer or O-ring each time the plug is removed, rather than pulling the plug up harder to cure a weep
• Check the magnet still holds firmly and is sound in its body; one that has weakened, cracked or worked loose collects nothing and can itself go through the system
• Tighten to the figure in the workshop manual for that housing — these plugs go into soft castings and are easily stripped
• Keep the plug and its threads clean of debris so it seats fully on its washer
