• Oil the journals and lobes before fitting and lower the shaft in squarely, without dragging it across the bearings or bearing bores
• Inspect the parts that run with it as a set — followers or rockers, bearings and the drive gear — and renew anything worn; a new camshaft on worn followers will not last
• Line up the gear timing marks and check valve timing before turning the engine over, and never force it against resistance
• Tighten bearing caps and drive gear fixings in the sequence and to the figures in the workshop manual for your engine
• Prime the oil system and turn the engine through by hand for a full cycle before starting, then keep the first period of running gentle
