• Drain the system to below the level of the pipe before disconnecting it and catch what comes out — coolant and raw water both make a mess of a bilge
• Renew the O-rings, seals or gaskets at each joint rather than reusing them, and lubricate rubber seals with clean coolant or the lubricant the manual specifies, never with oil or grease
• Check the bore is clear and clean before fitting; scale, silt and debris carried over from the old pipe will lodge in the pump or heat exchanger
• Support the pipe on its original brackets and clips so the joints carry no strain, and keep it clear of hot surfaces and moving parts
• Refill, bleed, then run the engine and check every joint for weeping while it is warm and under pressure
