• Clean the taper, key and keyway dry before assembly and check them for burrs, wear and hammer marks; the flange must pull up on the taper, not on the key
• Check the flange face for scoring, corrosion and runout, and the coupling bolt holes for elongation — a distorted flange shows up as vibration under way
• Where a shaft seal runs on the flange, check that running surface is smooth and unworn, because a scored surface will destroy a new seal
• Fit a new locking nut, tab washer or split pin as originally used, and tighten to the figure given in the workshop manual for your installation
• Check shaft alignment and face contact across the coupling after fitting, and re-check the fasteners after the first period of running
