• Clean both faces back to bare metal and remove every trace of old gasket and sealant before offering the housing up; trapped debris on this joint causes both leaks and misalignment
• Locate the housing on its dowels and pull it down evenly, working outwards from the centre, in the sequence and to the figures in the workshop manual for your engine
• Seal the joints where the housing meets the block and the sump exactly as the manual specifies — those corners are a common source of oil weeps
• Renew the crankshaft rear seal while the access is open rather than refitting an old one, and check its running surface at the same time
• Confirm the housing bore and face run true to the crankshaft before hanging a gearbox or drive on it; a housing out of alignment will destroy couplings and bearings
