🔌 Function
Circulates through the closed cooling circuit to carry heat out of the engine, and carries the inhibitor package that protects the internal surfaces against corrosion, cavitation and freezing.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Coolant in the header tank gone brown, rusty or cloudy
- An oily film or sludge floating in the expansion tank
- Scale or sediment visible in the tank or at the heat exchanger
- A test showing the inhibitor or the freeze protection has fallen away
- Level dropping with no external leak to account for it
🛠️ Service Notes
- Ask us to confirm which of the two variants matches the engine - the listing does not separate them on specification
- Replace the whole charge rather than mixing types when the coolant is changed
- Concentrated coolant should be mixed with pure distilled, deionized water or water which complies with Volvo STD 1285,1. Do not use tap water, it contains minerals that will form deposits inside the cooling system
- Change coolant 'out of step' with the coolant filter if such is used
- Volvo Penta coolant (Green) must not be mixed with Volvo Penta coolant VCS-1 (Yellow) or VCS-2 (Orange) - refer to the operator's manual
- Always use the same type of Volvo Penta coolant that originally came with the engine
