Transmits pressure through the hydraulic steering circuit while lubricating its pump, valves and cylinder.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • System response slow, heavy or spongy
  • Oil dark, cloudy or milky with water
  • Pump whining or the circuit aerating
  • Level falling, with weeps at unions, cylinders or seals
  • Poor cold response or a high running temperature where the wrong grade is in the system

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Check the grade the system specifies before topping up - mixing viscosity grades changes how the circuit behaves
  • Buy by the litre against the circuit volume: helm pump, hose run and cylinder all have to be filled and bled
  • Trace and cure a leak rather than topping up repeatedly, and bleed the circuit after any work
