- Coolant seeping from the joint line, leaving a dried deposit

- Sealing face corroded or eroded where coolant has tracked past
- Cover distorted so the gasket is not evenly compressed
- Crack from a bolt boss, or a stripped fixing thread found on removal

- Renew the gasket or sealing ring and clean both faces back to bare metal before refitting
- Check the cover for flatness, since a warped cover will leak again on a new gasket
- Tighten the fixings evenly and in stages so the cover is not pulled out of shape
