Carries fuel between fixed points in the fuel system along a rigid route, keeping the line clear of hot and moving parts.

  • Smell of diesel in the engine space, with a wet union or a dried trail on the pipe
  • Air drawn into the system on a suction line, giving hard starting or a misfire
  • Chafe marks or a flattened section where the pipe has touched another part
  • Union nuts loosening, or their faces found scored on removal
  • A crack at a flare or bend, sometimes visible only once the pipe is cleaned

  • Renew the sealing washers at the unions and support the pipe on its clips before final tightening
  • Bleed the fuel system and check every joint with the engine running before closing up
  • Fuel in the bilge is a fire risk, so mop up any spillage and check the joints again after the first run
