🔌 Function

Runs on the propeller shaft and keeps seawater out of the drive while holding the lubricating oil in, sealing against the shaft surface as it turns.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Oil level in the drive dropping, or the oil looking milky and creamy
  • Oil sheen on the water behind the boat
  • Fishing line or weed found wound tight against the seal area
  • Seal lip found hardened, cut or with its garter spring displaced
  • Groove worn into the shaft where the lip has been running

  • Inspect the shaft where the lip runs - a grooved shaft will destroy a new seal
  • Clear any line or weed from the shaft and consider a rope cutter if the boat works in fouled water
