• Coolant loss with no external leak, or mayonnaise-like emulsion under the oil filler
• White vapour from the exhaust and a rising expansion tank level
• Overheating and pressurised coolant hoses
• Low or uneven compression across cylinders
• Head found cracked between the valve seats or the face measured out of flat on strip-down

• Check the face for flatness and pressure-test the head before reusing or fitting one, as a warped face will fail a new gasket
• Renew the head gasket and the head bolts, and follow the angle-tightening sequence exactly
• Find and fix the cause of the overheat before refitting, or the new head will go the same way
