🔌 Function

Turns with the crankshaft and its lobes open the valves, and on these engines also drive the injection events, setting the timing of the whole valve train.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Rough running, misfire or a marked loss of power
  • Rhythmic knocking or heavy tapping from the valve gear
  • Valve clearances found well out of specification on more than one cylinder
  • Metallic debris or bronze-coloured glitter in the oil and filter
  • Lobes found pitted, flattened or spalled, and journals scored, on strip-down

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Check the engine serial number before ordering, as the fitment is serial-controlled and 15 kg is not a part to send back easily
  • A wiped lobe rarely happens alone - inspect the followers, bearings and oil supply, and flush the galleries before the new shaft runs
  • Set the timing marks carefully and reset valve clearances after fitting
