🔌 Function

Regulates coolant flow so the engine warms quickly and then holds its operating temperature, opening to the main circuit as the coolant reaches its rated temperature.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Engine slow to warm up, or never reaching normal temperature
• Overheating soon after start-up if the thermostat is stuck shut
• Temperature gauge swinging up and down instead of holding steady
• Poor cabin or accommodation heat where a heater circuit is fitted
• Thermostat found stuck, corroded or with a broken spring when removed

🛠️ Service Notes

• Test a suspect thermostat in hot water and watch it open before condemning it, and check for airlocks and a blocked circuit at the same time
• Renew the sealing ring or gasket with the thermostat, and refit it the right way up so the bleed hole sits at the top
• Bleed the system carefully after refilling, as trapped air gives the same symptoms as a failed thermostat
