🔌 Function

Passes oil through a core cooled by water or air so the heat the oil has picked up is carried away, keeping oil temperature and viscosity within their working range.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Oil temperature running high, worst after sustained load
  • Oil darkening and thinning quickly between changes
  • Water in the oil, or an oily film in the coolant, where the core has failed internally
  • External weeping or staining at the cooler joints
  • Core found furred, silted or corroded when opened up

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Check the flow and the strainer on the cooling side before condemning the cooler, as a restriction gives the same high oil temperature
  • Renew the seals and o-rings whenever the cooler is disturbed
  • Cross-contamination between oil and coolant means both circuits need flushing before the engine is run again
