🔌 Function

Transfers heat from the engine coolant into the raw seawater flowing through its core, so the coolant returns to the engine at working temperature and the heat goes overboard.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Engine temperature climbing under load and settling again at low power
  • Coolant loss with no external leak, or oil traces showing in the coolant
  • Salt crust or weeping at the end covers
  • Seawater side blocked with weed, scale or impeller debris
  • Tube stack found furred, split or corroded through when drawn

🛠️ Service Notes

  • At nearly 39 kg this needs proper support and lifting arranged before removal
  • Check the seawater pump impeller, strainer and anodes before condemning the exchanger for a running-hot complaint, as restricted seawater flow looks identical
  • Renew the end cover seals and o-rings whenever the core is disturbed
