⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Coolant, oil or fuel weeping or seeping from the joint, or staining and crusting around its edge
• Loss of pressure or compression at that part of the system, or an audible leak with the engine running
• Cracks, corrosion pitting or an uneven, distorted sealing face found on inspection
• Overheating, or a repeat gasket failure at the same joint, which usually means the face itself is no longer flat

🛠️ Service Notes

• Both mating faces must be spotlessly clean, dry and undamaged; lift old gasket material with a plastic or hardwood scraper, never a steel blade, and keep debris out of open ports and bores
• Always fit a new gasket and new seals — a gasket that has been compressed once will not seal again
• Check the faces for flatness and for cracks, corrosion pitting or distortion before refitting, and have the surface machined or the part renewed if it is outside tolerance
• Tighten the fixings in the sequence, in the stages and to the figures given in the workshop manual for your engine; where stretch bolts are used they must be replaced, not reused
• Run the engine up to temperature afterwards and check the joint for leaks and for correct pressure before the boat is used
