Carries coolant between two points in the cooling circuit, absorbing engine movement and vibration at the joints at each end.

- Coolant weeping or crusting at a hose end
- Coolant level falling with no puddle to be found
- Hose gone hard and cracked, or soft and spongy when squeezed
- A bulge or blister in the hose wall when the system is up to pressure
- Overheating, or the temperature gauge climbing under load

- Fit new clips rather than reusing stretched ones, and re-check them after the engine has been up to temperature and cooled again
- Check the stubs the hose fits over for corrosion or scoring - a pitted stub will weep past a new hose
