🔌 Function

The anode and bonding lead provide a sacrificial path for galvanic current around the IPS transom assembly, protecting the pod, mounting ring and connected underwater metals.

🛠️ Service Notes

• The transom-mounted sacrificial anode kit for Volvo Penta IPS1 / IPS10 installations on D4 and D6 engines. It is an aluminium anode, which Volvo Penta now recommends for salt and brackish water in place of zinc.
• On an electrically conductive metal hull this kit is not fitted on its own — the separate insulating mounting kit for conductive hulls is required with it.
• Good bare-metal contact between the anode and the surface it bonds to is what makes it work. Clean the mating faces properly, and never paint the anode or its seating.
• An anode that has stood in air a long time can develop a passivating film. Volvo Penta's guidance is to reactivate it by rubbing it back with emery paper before launch — not with sandpaper, a wire brush or any steel tool, which damage the galvanic protection.
• Anode life swings widely with water flow, salinity, temperature, pollution and stray current, so inspect at every haul-out rather than trusting a fixed interval, and follow the operator's manual for your installation on when to renew.
