🔧 Product Description
Genuine Volvo Penta anodes are made to sacrifice themselves in order to protect the drive and propeller from galvanic corrosion. Volvo Penta now recommends aluminium anodes in salt and brackish water instead of the zinc previously recommended for salt water, and is gradually phasing out and replacing most of its zinc anodes with aluminium ones. Aluminium anodes give 30% higher corrosion protection capacity, up to 20-40% longer life span in salt water compared with similarly sized zinc anodes, a lower environmental impact, and are the better choice for brackish water too. Magnesium is the material listed for fresh water. This is the anode listed for the transom anode, ips1 / ips10 position. Unlike the sterndrive and saildrive anodes, the Volvo Penta IPS anodes are listed under one heading covering salt, brackish and fresh water alike.
🚤 Compatibility
- Engine Family: D, IPS
- HP Range: 260-480 HP

⚙️ Key Features
- Transom anode for IPS1 and IPS10
- Listed for salt, brackish and fresh water
- 1.558 kg
- Listed for 40 applications across D series engines and IPS pods
- Supersedes 40005875
- Anode for the transom anode, ips1 / ips10 position.
- Aluminium anodes give 30% higher corrosion protection capacity than a similarly sized zinc anode.
- Up to 20-40% longer life span in salt water than a similarly sized zinc anode.
- Lower environmental impact, and the better choice for brackish water as well as salt.
- Aluminium anodes can be used for all types of hull material.
- Volvo Penta anodes feature, where needed, an internal reinforcement made from an alloy that does not erode, which also ensures a reliable electrical connection between the anode and the drive.
- Fits: Transom anode, IPS1 / IPS10
- Sacrificial anode for the transom position on Volvo Penta IPS1 and IPS10 installations
- Position: transom
- Water type: Salt, brackish and fresh water
- Fits: Volvo Penta IPS1 and IPS10 installations
🔌 Function
Corrodes in preference to the metal it is bonded to, so the drive and transom hardware are protected instead.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Anode visibly wasted, pitted or reduced to a fraction of its original size
- Pitting, blistering or white powdery corrosion appearing on the drive itself
- Anode showing almost no wastage after a season, which points to a poor bonding connection
- Anode loose on its fastenings or lost altogether
- Paint or antifouling found covering the anode face
🛠️ Service Notes
- Confirm the drive generation: this covers IPS1 and IPS10, while IPS15, IPS2/20 and IPS3/30 take transom anode 23172856
- Renew at around half wastage rather than waiting for it to disappear, and never paint or antifoul an anode
- Where Active Corrosion Protection is fitted it takes over from the standard transom mounted anodes, so check what the installation carries before ordering
- Salt and brackish water: aluminium (or, on some older drives, cadmium-free zinc marked Zn). Fresh water: magnesium.
- When installing a new anode it is important to have good contact between the anode and the surface to which it is connected.
- If an anode has been exposed to air for a long time it can be covered by a passivating surface film that prevents it working properly; consider reactivating it with emery paper before launching. Do not use sandpaper, a wire brush or other steel tools when cleaning, as these may damage the galvanic protection.
- Water flow, salinity, temperature, pollution levels and stray current considerably affect anode life.
- Read the operator's manual for detailed information on maintaining and replacing anodes.
- Volvo Penta anodes carry, where needed, an internal reinforcement in an alloy that does not erode, which also keeps a reliable electrical connection between the anode and the drive
