🔌 Function

The anode is electrically bonded to the transom assembly and is consumed preferentially, reducing galvanic attack on the drive, mounting ring and connected underwater metals.

🛠️ Service Notes

• The transom-mounted sacrificial anode kit for the larger Volvo Penta IPS installations — IPS15, IPS2/20 and IPS3/30 on D8, D11 and D13 engines — supplied with its mounting and bonding hardware.
• Volvo Penta lists it against fibreglass hulls. On an electrically conductive metal hull the separate insulating kit for conductive hulls has to be used with it.
• Good bare-metal contact between the anode and the surface it bonds to is what makes it work. Clean the mating faces properly, and never paint the anode or its seating.
• An anode that has stood in air a long time can develop a passivating film. Volvo Penta's guidance is to reactivate it by rubbing it back with emery paper before launch — not with sandpaper, a wire brush or any steel tool, which damage the galvanic protection.
• Anode life swings widely with water flow, salinity, temperature, pollution and stray current, so inspect at every haul-out rather than trusting a fixed interval, and follow the operator's manual for your installation on when to renew.
