• Weeping or a damp film at the joint the ring seals
• Ring found flattened, hardened or squared off on removal
• Nibbled or extruded edge where the ring has been forced into a gap
• Pressure or vacuum lost at that joint
• Fluid seeping past shortly after a previous assembly, pointing to a pinched ring
